Just another Learnerblogs.org weblog

I have learned so much about the Renaissance! The Renaissance is a lot more interesting than I would of thought. It is really surprising to me that they didn’t have pianos and they only got toilets towards the end of their time period. I think that the Renaissance has been my favorite subject in socials. I think it is the most interesting and fun. I think that the game that we played was good because it was fun but we learned a lot! :)

The last 2 classes were really fun! I learned so much. When you think back you don’t realize how little the people in the renaissance had, they didn’t have pianos and they only had toilets towards the end of their time period. I also learned that in the renaissance you weren’t allowed to buy certain foods if you weren’t rich. You could afford it, you just weren’t allowed to buy it. The renaissance was all counted on how much money you owned or what you looked like, it wasn’t fair and I am really glad that had changed! :)

What is the issue?

Food coloring has been proven bad for you!

Scientists are starting to truly believe that food coloring is behind all the strange behavior of young kids and sometimes teenagers. A team at the University of Southampton tested different food colorings on both three year olds and eight-to-nine year olds. Their results supported that food coloring is linked to young kids having temper tantrums, poor concentration, hyperactivity and allergic reactions.  At a recent closed meeting the Committee noted the “public health importance” of the new findings but the results will not be acted until published in a scientific journal. At a recent closed meeting the Committee noted the “public health importance” of the new findings but the results will not be acted until published in a scientific journal. At the meeting it was brought up that we can never fully stop eating food coloring because even if it is only little food coloring is in almost all food, the only thing that we can do is eat less of it.

Who is involved?

The people that are involved are the team at the University of Southampton because they did the tests, the kids who were tested, people who got/are getting sick, and everyone else in the world that eats food coloring.

United Kingdom map

URL: http://www.christopherholt.com/gifs/england-map-02.jpg

The areas where people got sick were mostly in the Highlands of Scotland but partly in Northern Ireland.

 Who is affected and how?

Everybody in the world if we know it or not is affected by this because everybody at some point or another eats food coloring weather you know you are or not. Kids who eat more cake and so on are mostly affected from the icing. The government is affected the most because they have to pay for the tests to be performed.

What would you do if you were directly involved?

If I was directly involved I would try to take out most of the food coloring from most foods. I would only let food coloring stay the same in cakes! :) I think that if we cut down on food coloring it would change the way people live and how their lives are. From what I read in this article it sounds like food coloring is what sets mental problems in place. Without food coloring there wouldn’t be as many problems in people’s lives as there are now.

Even though loads of people in our class didn’t record or put their interview on their blog I still learner a lot!
- From Iqmal I learned that John Hawkins was born in 1532, his greatest achievement was being knighted by Queen Elizabeth the first, he also had his own business.
- From Max I learned that Johann Gutenberg was born in Germany and invented books and that was also his greatest achievement.
- From Charlotte I learned that Giovanni Boccaccio was born in 1313 in his father’s hometown and lived there, he wrote the book Decameron. His father was his inspiration and found his literature talent. He also wrote other books and was best at writing romantic stories.
- From Tony I didn’t really learn much because I couldn’t hear his interview but what I did learn is as follows. Nicolas Copernicus was born in 1473 and his father was very good at math. He first studied medicine and then studied astronomy.
I noticed that it was hard to hear some of the recordings but I thought that the overall project was awesome! :)

If I could do my whole thing over again I would make it longer and more detailed. When we had the assignment I didn’t think it had to be that long but everyone else’s were really long. So next time I will make mine longer. On my interview I put all the information I found into it but there wasn’t a lot because on every website I went to they had the same information. I think that my interview was good but again a bit short.

For this project I researched John Calvin.
John Calvin was a great man, he created these 5 editions about religion. Before these editions religion existed but nobody really took any notice about it, after these editions were published people respected religion, other people and their lives. John Calvin had a hard life, his father didn’t appreciate what he wanted to become and what he wanted to do with his life, all his father cared about is what he wanted John to become, a lawyer. John studied to become a lawyer for a while but when his father was dying he told John that he could become whatever he wanted. John really loved literature and writing about anything that he sees. When his father told him that he could become what he wanted it was straight to literature and scholarship for him! I found it really fun to research John Calvin because he had a truly amazing life, he moved around over and over again and interested many people including me. That was awesome!! :)

Joseph’s current event was about a flash flook in thailand that killed 35 people while other people are still lost in the water and in other places. This news report is like one that was posted yesterday….

Hard thunderstorms caused a flash flood in Eastern Sydney on Sunday Night. The storm only lasted a few hours but during those few hours nearly 3.9 inches of rain fell, this is only 3 quarters of expected rain fall in the whole of April. According to the news report the floods were a result of an up coming thunderstorm.

I think that Jospeh’s Current Event was really interesting, it caught my attention, there were other cases like this that made it more interesting! :)

The person I chose was Bill Gates because without him we wouldn’t have half of our computer, for example: with out Bill Gates we wouldn’t have any Microsoft programs and we also wouldn’t have the internet weather it was msn or just the internet. Bill Gates was born on October 28, 1955 shortly after 9:00pm. He was born into a rich history in business, politics, and community services. His Great-Grandfather was a state mayor, his Grandfather was the vice-president of a national bank and his father was a lawyer. Bill was born with high intelligence and a competitive spirit which helped him reach his goal in creating software. In school he was ahead of all his classmates in pretty much every subject especially math and science. His parents noticed that he was ahead so transferred him to Lakeside, a private school known for their advanced education. At Lakeside Bill Gates was first introduced to computers.
In the spring of 1968 the Lakeside Private School decided that it would be good to introduce computers to the student body. The computers truly inspired Bill Gates and his close friend Paul Allen, Paul Allen and Bill were two of the first people to be hired at Microsoft. They would stay in the computer room all day and all night writing programs and learning everything there was to learn about computers. If their homework was turned in at all it was turned in late, they were skipping classes to be in the computer room and the worst thing was that they had used up all the schools computer time in just a few weeks.
Years later when Bill had finished school he knew so much about computers that he was allowed to work at any computer organization and at any software company. He started working for Microsoft; he was the best paid worker at that software company. When he was rich enough (which didn’t take long) he decided that he would buy Microsoft. As he then owned Microsoft he decided to buy the internet also. The internet was already made and working but Bill Gates made some changes to make it a lot better. After his changes the internet became the internet as we know it. As I said before without Bill Gates we wouldn’t have computers, Microsoft or the internet as we know it.

WOW! :) There is sooooo much that I could talk about, telling you people what I learned about Rome today is a VERY BIG topic! Well… we learned about how much Ancient Rome has influenced us and how we do things today. The one thing that we learned about today that really took me by surprise was how many innocent people got killed/murdered, for example: Julius Ceasar got murdered by his closest friends.
Julius Ceasar
One of the other really amazing things about Rome is the Gladiators that they had. Some people say that being a Gladiator would be really cool and fun because you get to fight animals and other people. Being a Gladiator either means you win or you get killed. When you are a Gladiator you fight for your life and for freedom, if and when you fall the crowd will either give you a thumbs up or a thumbs down, if you get a thumbs up you are sentenced to stay alive, while on the other hand if you get a thumbs down you are sentenced to death.
Gladiators
We also learned about The Pantheon, The Pantheon is a temple that was built in honor of all the gods, and has the record of the biggest intact roof in the world today.

In the last two Social Studies classes I have learned about the Black Death, also known as the Plague. The Plague was a terrible disease that killed millions of people in a matter of days. If you were infected with the disease you would die within a week.

plage doctors
This is a picture of “The Plague Doctors.” These doctors all look the same, and sort of look like a bird. :)

The Black Death started around the late 1300’s when a weird kind of disease infected the crew members on a ship, it was known that there were infected rats on board the ship. As the boat came to land the rats got off and started to infect people in Europe. This spread very fast. A quick spreading disease is also known as a Pandemic deasise. At this time the “Great Famine” struck. When you are hungry it makes it easier for the Black Death to target and kill you. England didn’t get infected with the Black Death, they were very lucky. The Black Death finally went away, but it didn’t stop there. It came back and this time hit England.

At this time nobody knew how this terrible deasise had started. Some people thought it spread through the air while others thought it was a person-to-person kind of disease. Some people thought that the Jews were to blame while some thought that God had done it because he was upset with all the sins that his people had been making.
People decided that they would whip themselves on their back to make God forgive them and the sins they had done. This theory became very popular, so people would just walk around whipping themselves on the back.

Medieval Whip
This is the kind of whip that they probobly would have used. I wouldn’t want to have been alive in the Middle Ages! :p

What is the issue??

The issue is that every where around the world prescription drugs are becoming easier to get a hold of. Prescription drugs can be more deadly than normal drugs like crack etc. In some countries prescription drugs are being sold on the streets without the need of an actual prescription from a doctor. This could become worse than the actual drug problem we had before. The drugs are also not very good quality which makes it even more dangerous for the people who decide to take them.
“People don’t die from carrying a fake handbag or wearing a fake t-shirt. They can die from taking a counterfeit medicine.” - WHO spokeswoman

Who is included??

WHO - World Health Organization, and the police all around the world.

Who is affected and how??

People who take the drugs are very heavily affected for 2 reasons:
1. The drugs are very deadly and very dangerous to the people who take them.
2. The drugs are in very bad condition which makes them even more deadly to the people who take them.

What would you do if you were directly involved??

If I was directly involved i would ban all drug selling on the streets and make sure that every where you can buy drugs requires a prescription otherwise you dont get the drugs. I would also make sure that the drugs were not in bad condition to start with other wise that makes it dangerous even if you have a prescription.
